Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long should you be doing yoga before teacher training?

While everyone learns at a different pace, ideally you'll have been practicing for at least 6 months to a year. This is because it can be overwhelming to both learn how to do yoga and how to teach yoga simultaneously.

Q: How do I become a yoga teacher in New Jersey?

To become a certified yoga teacher eligible to register with Yoga Alliance you must do your 200 hour yoga teacher training with a Yoga Alliance accredited program such as Soma Yoga Teacher Training.

Q: Can I be a teacher even if I can't do all of the postures (poses/asanas)?

YES! There is so much more to yoga than the postures and not every person is capable of doing every posture. As long as you understand foundational principles of alignment, breathing (pranayama), and philosophy you can still teach.

Q: Can you do yoga teacher training as a beginner?

A: Doing teacher training as an absolute beginner is not recommended since you would be learning both how to do yoga and how to teach yoga at the same time. Having an established practice and some embodied knowledge is important when starting yoga teacher training.

Q: What does 200 hour yoga teacher training mean?

A 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training is the minimum certification level recognized by Yoga Alliance and the curriculum must meet Yoga Alliance's Core Curriculum Standards. You will spend 200 classroom hours with a Yoga Alliance-recognized lead teacher trainer.

Q: What is the difference between 200 & 500 hour yoga teacher training?

A 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training is the minimum certification level recognized by Yoga Alliance and is considered a basic or "foundational-level credential" for a Register Yoga Teacher. A 500 Hour Yoga Teacher Training is recognized by Yoga Alliance as an advanced or "professional-level credential" for a Registered Yoga Teacher. Those wishing to attain a 500 Hour certification can either complete a 200 Hour program followed by a 300 Hour program, or they may opt to enter directly into a 500 Hour program.

Q: How intense is a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

Yoga Teacher Training is quite intense. It is a commitment that requires a regular home yoga practice as well as outside reading and homework in addition to classroom hours.

Q: Is 200 hours enough to teach yoga?

Yes… and there is always room for learning more. Yoga is an open-ended learning process and we believe that the best teachers are also lifelong students!

Q: How many days is 200 hour yoga teacher training?

The number of days depends on how a particular Yoga Teacher Training program is broken down. Soma Yoga 200 Hour Teacher Training meets in person for a total of 160 hours over 9 months (totaling 25 days) and virtually for a total of 40 hours. Check out our 2023/2024 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training schedule.
